How to Turn On Camera on Facebook Messenger in Windows 10
Due to security and privacy concerns, most Windows 10 PC programs, including Facebook Messenger, are not enabled to have access to the attached generic camera or webcam device by default.
When you make a video call for the first time on your Windows 10 PC using the Messenger app, the program will usually ask for permission to use your camera. You only have to give permission the first time, and the Messenger app will not ask you again if it needs access to your camera in the future.
If you don’t see the pop-up, take the instructions below to manually grant Messenger permission to use your webcam in Windows 10.
1. Go to Settings by searching for it via Windows 10 search bar or Cortana.
2. Choose Privacy in the Settings window. Then choose Camera in “App permissions” in the left pane.
3. In “Allow access to the camera on this device “, tap on Change and ensure the “Camera access for this device ” option is turned on .
4. In “Allow apps to access your camera “, ensure the option is turned on .
5. Look for the Messenger app under “Choose which Microsoft Store applications may use your camera ” and make sure the option next to it is turned on . This will give the Messenger app access to your camera.
6. After you’ve completed the steps above, try making a video call again. It should connect without prompting you for access permission again, and your camera should now be working in the video call.
If Messenger says no camera detected…
It might be a problem with your camera’s connection, a driver issue, or malfunctioning hardware. Follow the steps below to see if you have a functioning camera linked to your computer:
1. Look for Device Manager in the Start menu and launch it.
2. Expand Cameras to see if any cameras are listed.
3. If there is, right-click it and choose properties to check if the device is operational.
If your camera isn’t shown in the cameras section, it isn’t connected or installed. Double-check that the camera is properly connected to your PC and that the camera’s driver is installed using the driver CD that came with the camera when you bought it.
