How To Fix New Hard Drive Not Showing Up In Disk Management

When your computer’s storage space for your data (videos, photos, music, and so on) runs out, it’s time to upgrade to a new hard drive.

This can be used as a separate data drive from the one on which your Windows 10 operating system is installed. Even though adding a new hard disk to your computer is very simple, problems might arise. In this edition of our troubleshooting series, we’ll teach you how to resolve the problem of a new hard drive not appearing in disk management.

How To Fix New Hard Drive Not Showing Up In Disk Management

It’s advised to restart your computer before doing any of the following troubleshooting methods for this problem. This will update the operating system and fix the majority of the problems you’re having with your computer.

Check the SATA cable

A problem with the connection between the hard drive and the motherboard can create this problem. The SATA cable is the sole item that links these two devices. Make sure it’s properly inserted on both ends. Try using an extra SATA cable if you have one. You must also ensure that the hard disk’s power cable is connected.

Check the BIOS

The BIOS is a piece of software that is installed on the computer motherboard that recognizes and configures the hardware and instructs it on how to conduct tasks like booting. You can get into your computer’s BIOS by restarting it and continually hitting the Setup key at the very beginning of the Startup routine. During the initial boot, most motherboards will display the Setup key, which can be any of the following keys: F2, F4, F8, F10, F12, or the Del key.

Check to see whether your computer can recognize the HDD once you’re in the BIOS. If it still won’t work, try a different SATA cable or hard disk. Try connecting the SATA cord to another SATA port as well.

Delete all ATA channel Drivers

This problem is sometimes caused by a flaw in the ATA drivers. If this is the problem, you’ll need to uninstall these drivers. When windows 10 starts up again, it will look for these drivers and install a new version.

  • To launch the Run dialog box, press Windows key + R.
  • To open Device Manager, type “devmgmt.msc” and press Enter.
  • Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers drop-down selection in Device Manager.
  • Repeat the method for each ATA Channel you have under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers once the first ATA Channel has been uninstalled.
  • Once all ATA Channels have been removed, restart your computer.

Delete the hard drive from Storage Spaces

There’s a probability that this problem will arise if you used the hard disk to create a shared storage area. Storage Spaces is a virtual disk that consists of many storage devices. These disks are combined into a single storage device. If you used storage spaces to include the hard drive that isn’t showing up in Disk Management, eliminating the HDD from the storage pool will most likely fix the problem.

  • To launch the Run dialog box, press Windows key + R.
  • To open Control Panel, type “control” and hit Enter.
  • Click System and Security in the Control Panel, then Storage Spaces.
  • Expand your Storage pool options and click the Delete button next to the storage area where your HDD is located.
  • When the confirmation prompt appears, select Yes, and then restart your computer.

Import the foreign disk from disk management

The hard drive cannot be seen by disk management if it is viewed as a foreign disk. To fix the problem, you’ll need to import this foreign disk.

  • To launch the Run dialog box, press Windows key + R.
  • To open Disk Management, type “diskmgmt.msc” and press Enter.
  • Check to check if you have another disk under your OS disk in the Disk Management software. If you have one, right-click on it and select Import Foreign Disks from the drop-down menu.
  • Both Disk Management and File Explorer should show your new HDD drive as a volume.

Install the motherboard SATA driver from the manufacturer website

An issue with the SATA drivers installed in your computer might sometimes create this problem. To resolve this, go to the motherboard manufacturer’s website and download the most recent SATA driver. Restart your computer and check if the problem persists.
