Welcome back today at Windows Free Apps Blog, yesterday we showed you a few tips to make your Internet faster, now we will introduce you how to find the best wifi channel using inSSIDer. It is a great app can help troubleshoot your wireless network.
How Would You Use The InSSIDer to find the Best Channel For Wifi?
MetaGeek’s InSSIDer is one of the best apps to find the best wifi channel within the range of your computer. inSSIDer is a free, open source. For every Wi-Fi network near your computer, InSSIDer will show you the SSID (network names), what type of wifi security, and other settings of nearby access points. This information is then displayed in an informative, easy to understand graphical form.
If you find that your network uses the same channel as nearby networks with strong signals, you should change your Wi-Fi router channel. All routers have a settings screen that supports you do this. You can also use the InSSIDer to detect “dead zones” where you can’t connect a strong Wi-Fi connection. Walk around your home with InSSIDer installed on your laptop to see where signal strength drops.
Download and Install InSSIDer
You can download and install the inSSIDer from here, just click ‘Next‘ repeatedly to get it installed.
Scan for networks
Check Wifi signal strength of your home, the lower the better. You click on the tab marked ‘2.4GHz channels‘, then look at the top of the screen for a button ‘Start‘. This sets inSSIDer hunting around your local area for networks. It’ll probably find more than Windows does. Click ‘Stop‘ when you’re done.
Find the best wifi channel
This is a graph of where the networks in your area fall along the 11 main wifi channels. Their height represents their signal strength from your current location. Now, you need to find an area with some empty space, or a quiet channel, and important its number down. The best wifi channel you selected will be your network’s new home. To change wifi channel on your router, you need to connect to your router’s admin interface, which is different for every model.
Tip: The best Wireless channel are 1, 6 and 11.
Metageek explains this well ”The 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) spectrum is 100 MHz wide and made up of 11 channels centered 5 MHz apart. Each 2.4GHz channel is 20 – 22 MHz wide.”
If each channel is 20 MHz wide, this means there will be a minimum of 10 MHz of overlap with neighboring channels (overlapping channel interference). For example, if your network is on channel 4, it will overlap with channels 2, 3, 5, 6.
If you want to install inSSIDer on your Windows PC then your PC has minimum requirements
- Operating system: Microsoft® Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10
