How to add tabs on Windows 11 File Explorer

In this video, we are gonna show you how to add tabs on Windows 11 File Explorer.

  • Tabs support in File Explorer is one of the most requested enhancements for Windows 11.
  • While Microsoft has yet to implement this feature, users can still make their wishes come true.
  • There’s a free program called Files on the Microsoft Store that provides much-needed tab support.
  • Note that the Files app isn’t a full substitute for the default File Explorer; it simply adds new functions.

Despite the fact that Windows 11 has a new, more fluid style, most users are dismayed to find that the File Explorer still lacks the much-desired tab capability.

For years, everyone has expressed their desire for tabs in File Explorer, but Microsoft has failed to make this a reality.

Now, while the File Explorer in Windows 11 does not support tabs, there is a program named Files that does.

What is Files?

This is not Microsoft software, but rather a third-party app created by an independent developer that was released to the public in July 2019.

Also, while the software isn’t a complete substitute for the default File Explorer, it does provide users with one of the most requested features: tabs.

Files have undergone multiple changes and a redesigned look since its first release, which makes it look pretty natural on Windows 11 thanks to its updated icons and layout.

Another nice feature of this program is that you may use it on Windows 10 if you aren’t sure if you want to upgrade when the final version is released.

In this regard, you should be aware that the most recent Windows 11 preview build includes certain visual improvements to the menus and program previews.

The Files app is also touch-friendly and scales well, whether you’re using it on a tablet or a desktop computer. It lacks some of the functionality of Microsoft’s File Explorer, but it can do some functions that set it apart.

Files have a significant advantage over the default File Explorer in that it supports tabs. As a result, you may navigate between different files and folders without having to repeatedly open a new window.

Also, keep in mind that this program allows you to drag and drop files across tabs as well as hover over folders and tabs to access them.

Specific system requierments to install the app

As with every app, there are some minimal requirements that your device must meet in order to use it, as listed below:

Fortunately, if you want this capability on your Windows 11 device, you’re all set.

We should point out that in order to download and use the app, you must be logged into your Microsoft account.

All you have to do on your Windows 11 device to take use of this functionality is follow the steps below.

What are some of Files best features?

Apart from the much-desired tabs feature, Files’ developer, Yair Aichenbaum, did his utmost to match the overall look of Windows to offer users a natural experience when using the software.

Files use Microsoft’s Fluent Design to provide bright and dark modes, OS-compatible icons, and the ability to drag and hold an item over a tab or folder to open it. The ability to manage OneDrive files as if they were native File Explorer is one of the Files’ best features.

You may choose which OneDrive files should be stored locally and which should be stored only in the cloud to save space.

Another point worth highlighting is that Aichenbaum takes all app comments into account, as evidenced by their GitHub – CONTRIBUTING.md page:

Files thrives off of the contributions and input from users. We always look at your feedback when we decide what to work on next and we look forward to hearing your ideas. We welcome your contributions to the Files project, especially to fix bugs and to make improvements which address the top issues reported by Files users.

Because your feedback will help shape the future of Files, any suggestions or enhancements you make may actually make a difference, which we think is quite exciting.

So, until Microsoft decides to incorporate this feature in the next OS, you can just use this third-party tool to make surfing your PC a lot easier.
