When you play FIFA using a controller, you have far more control over your players. However, the game may fail to recognize your controller at times. If FIFA 22 fails to identify your controller, use the troubleshooting procedures listed below to resolve the issue.
How to I force FIFA to recognize my controller?
Unplug your controller and check your ports
Restart your computer after unplugging your controller. Then try plugging the controller into a different port to see if it makes a difference. It’s possible that the port you’re currently using is broken.
Check the results after restarting FIFA after plugging the controller into a different port.
Disconnect additional peripherals
Disconnect any additional gadgets you will not be using during your FIFA gaming session. It’s possible that they’re interfering with your controller. Before starting FIFA, unplug all of your gadgets except the controller. As a result, your controller will be the only input detected.
Remove all other controllers, joysticks, your mouse and keyboard, and everything else you can think of. Bluetooth should also be turned off.
Use your controller to get into the game
When FIFA asks you to enter the game by pressing Start or Spacebar, it also notes that whatever button you press will become your default controller device. So, if you want to play the game, avoid using your keyboard. Instead, use your controller.
Update your controller drivers to the latest version
- Open the Device Manager application.
- Right-click on your controller to choose it.
- Update the driver by selecting it.
- Restart your computer and see whether the problem has been resolved by updating your controller driver.
If the problem remains, right-click on your controller again and select Uninstall device this time. Keep your controller plugged in and restart your computer to have a new copy of the latest controller driver installed automatically.
Launch FIFA from EA Desktop
Add EA Desktop to your Steam library and launch it instead of FIFA. From EA Desktop, launch FIFA as normal. Check to see if your controller is working properly.
If that doesn’t work, move on to the next step.
Hide DS4 windows
If you have to utilize DS4Windows with a PS4 or PS5 controller, select “Hide DS4Windows” and see if that solves the problem. Several users confirmed that this short fix worked for them.
Change controller configuration settings
Change your controller setup settings if you’re playing on Steam.
1. Go to Steam’s Settings after launching it.
2. Then go to Controller and click on Global Controller for Settings.
3. Depending on your controller, choose the following controller configuration:
- Xbox Configuration Support
- PlayStation Configuration Support
- Generic Gamepad Configuration Support
4. Then go to Library in Big Picture mode.
5. Choose FIFA, then Settings, then Controller Settings from the drop-down menu.
6. Both checkboxes should be disabled, and Steam input settings should be set to Force on.
7. Close Steam and restart your PC after making the modifications.
8. Start FIFA and make sure your controller is working properly.
Change Steam input per FIFA settings
1. Start Steam, go to View, and choose Big Picture Mode.
2. Go to the Library and select Games.
3. Go to Manage Games and select FIFA.
4. Then expand the Controller Options list.
5. Open Change the Steam Input Per-Game Settings
6. Choose Forced On and save the changes
7. Restart Steam, then launch FIFA to see if your controller is now working.
Get a new controller
Check to see if you can use a different controller to play FIFA. If it works, it means your controller is either broken or incompatible with the FIFA version you’re using. You may need to purchase a new controller if you’re using a very old one.
Many FIFA players who had the same issue with a PS4 or PS5 controller and switched to a wired Xbox controller reported that the issue was resolved.
