How to Fix Discord Keeps Disconnecting and Reconnecting?

Method 1. Check your internet connection

The first thing you should check if your Discord keeps disconnecting is your internet connection. Check to see if the connection is solid and not constantly disconnecting.

Method 2. Check the Discord status page

The second thing you should do is see if Discord is up and running. Navigate to their status page to verify if their server is operational.

If everything is in order, the top of the page will read “All Systems Operational.”

Method 3. Restart your device and router

Restarting your computer and router is another simple repair that works for many people who are experiencing persistent Discord disconnection.

Method 4. Run the WebRTC Troubleshooter

If you’re not sure what’s wrong with your connection or system, try using the WebRTC Troubleshooter, which is a free, safe, and straightforward web tool. This utility performs a thorough examination of your online connectivity and notifies you if any issues are discovered.

Simply launch the WebRTC Troubleshooter and hit the Start button to begin the test.

Resolving your RTC connection issues may result in the Discord app disconnecting issue being resolved as well.

Method 4. Check/Disable your VPN

Do you use a virtual private network (VPN) to preserve your online privacy? If you do, you might be using one that isn’t Discord-compatible. Check to see if your VPN is running on a UDP (User Diagram Protocol) port and not a TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) port.

The majority of popular VPNs can be set up to run on either port. However, when compared to TCP, UDP is faster. As a result, Discord only supports VPNs that run on UDP. If your VPN isn’t set up to run on UDP, you’ll have to turn it off while using Discord.

Method 5. Disable your Antivirus/Firewall

If none of the previous methods work for you, you should try disabling your antivirus/firewall (at least temporarily). You may either totally stop the services or white list Discord to bypass their security. You’ll need to restart your computer after you’ve completed this.

Method 6. Contact Network Admin at School/Work

If you’re experiencing difficulties accessing Discord on your school or work network, you should check with your network administrator to be sure it hasn’t been disabled. Many schools and companies will disable Discord in order to boost student/worker productivity.

Method 7. Change the Server Voice Region on Discord

Now that you’ve exhausted all external debugging options, it’s time to attempt a few things within Discord.

Changing the server voice region is the first thing you should try. It’s possible that your Discord keeps disconnecting because the local server region that you are connected to is busy.

Discord automatically determines your region and links you to the latest update, according to the most recent update. However, as the server administrator, you have the ability to override the region.

Take the following steps:

1. Hover your mouse pointer over the name of the voice channel and click on the “Edit Channel” icon. You may also right-click on the channel name and choose “Edit Channel.”

2. Scroll down to locate “Region Override” in the overview section. The default setting for the region is “Automatic.”

3. Choose a different server (not the one nearest to you) from the menu.

Method 8. Disable Voice Quality of Service (QoS) on Discord

Discord features a Voice Quality of Service (VoS) function that uses extra data to send high-quality audio. When you enable this feature, Discord will be able to tell your router to prioritize packets carrying high-quality audio.

Unfortunately, some routers and ISPs do not react well to this feature,, causing your internet connection to be momentarily disconnected. This could be the cause of Discord’s persistent disconnections.

Follow these steps to alter this setting:

1. In the lower left corner of the Discord window, click on the “User Settings” icon (next to your username).

2. Find App Settings > Voice & Video on the left-hand side of the screen and click it.

3. Scroll down the Voice & Video page until you reach the “Quality of Service” section. The “Enable Quality of Service Hight Packet Priority” option can be found there. Toggle the function to the Off position.

4. Restart Discord.

Method 9. Clear your Discord cache

Every GIF, video, or picture you send through Discord adds to the cache files. It’s possible that this is why your Discord keeps disconnecting. So you might try erasing all of the Discord cache files that have accumulated.

Follow these instructions to clear Discord cache on Windows:

1. Press Windows + E to open Windows Explorer.

2. Type %appdata%\discord in the file path box and press enter.

3. You’ll be taken to Discord’s AppData folder. Three directories, in particular, must be found: “Cache”, “Code Cache”, and “GPUCache”.

4. These files should be chosen (Hold down the Ctrl key and click on each of them). Then hold down Shift+Delete. On Windows, this will remove your Discord cache.

Follow these procedures to clear Discord cache on Android:

1. Go to Settings on your Android device.

2. Select “Apps & Notifications” from the drop-down menu.

3. Type “Discord” into the search bar at the top. Tap Discord when it shows in the search results.

4. Select “Storage & cache” from the drop-down menu.

5. Select “Clear Cache” from the drop-down menu. On Android, this will erase your Discord cache.

Follow these procedures to clear Discord cache on Mac:

1. Open Finder.

2. Click “Go” and then “Go to Folder” from the drop-down menu.

3. A text box will appear on the screen. Enter the following: ~/Library/Application Support/discord/.

4. The Discord data folder will be provided to you. Find three folders labeled “Cache“, “Code Cache“, and “GPUCache” like previously.

5. Choose these files, hit Option+Command+Delete. On Mac, this will remove your Discord cache.

Method 10. Change your DNS Server

There’s one more thing you may try if Discord still keeps disconnecting. You could try changing the DNS server of your device.

The DNS (Domain Name Service) provider is who your computer contacts in order to translate content into code that can be transmitted over the internet.

To remedy difficulties such as continuous disconnection, decreased voice quality, and images not loading, Discord Support recommends changing your DNS server to Google Public DNS or Cloudflare 1.1.1.1.

Follow these procedures to change the DNS server on Windows:

1. Click on Start, type Control Panel into the search box, and select it.

2. Select Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center from the drop-down menu.

3. Choose Change adapter settings from the drop-down menu. Locate the connection you’re using now, right-click it, and choose Properties.

4. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 from the drop-down menu and click Properties. Choose “Use the following DNS server addresses” and input one of the two addresses below:

Google: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

5. Click the OK button.

6. Select Internet Protocol Version 6 from the drop-down menu and click Properties. Choose “Use the following DNS server addresses” and input one of the two addresses below:

Google: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844

Cloudflare: 2606:4700:4700::1111 and 2606:4700:4700::1001

7. Click the OK button. In the Properties window, click OK as well.

Follow these steps to change the DNS server on your Mac:

1. Open System Preferences from the Apple Menu.

2. Select Network and find and select the connection you’re using right now. Click on Advanced.

3. Open the DNS tab and remove all currently listed servers.

4. Tap the + icon to add new IPv4 and IPv6 DNS addresses:

Google:

IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and 2001:4860:4860::8844

Cloudflare:

IPv4: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1

IPv6: 2606:4700:4700::1111 and 2606:4700:4700::1001

Follow these steps to change the DNS server on Android:

Download the Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 app from Google PlayStore.
